After a career in public service, it’s time for me to give back. I have learned a lot of lessons in my government career, and some ideas worked, some didn’t. In the last few years, in trying to develop a culture that respects innovation, I have learned to embrace and learn from my ideas that fail. Every single time, this has led me to an idea that worked.
I have managed conferences for nearly 2000 people, and I have spent the last 4 years trying to convince the world that virtual training can be successful, when they are angry that they don’t get to go on “official travel”. I have learned the power of email, the power of social media platforms, and I’ve learned to respect the possibilities that any business can achieve by embracing technology. In the past 3 years, we have built a virtual learning platform that has over 135,000 users. Our users hate change, but I have learned that engaging those users in technology makes it palatable.
Not so long ago (well, it was more than 10 years), I was teaching a training class in Temple, Texas. What was I teaching? I was teaching physicians and nurses how to use the Computerized Patient Record System, a home grown software program that would help VA move to electronic records. Halfway through the class, a female physician was in tears. She had never taken a typing class. She didn’t know how she could embrace this new software. She yelled at me before she ran out of the room in tears. That moment changed me. I had to learn to present technology at the level my audience could handle it. I had to learn not to scare people. In practical terms, I had to teach people to crawl before they could learn to walk. (and just so you know — that was before smart phones and social media! Sometimes I wonder what that physician is doing today!)
